And among them lived innovators, artists, and campaigners whose head-turning discoveries and endearing antics were preserved in local newspaper accounts. Of course, most of the town s population consisted of stalwart men and women from ranchers, road builders, and business owners to maids, saloon keepers, and farmhands who worked hard following their careers and visions of their lives. From the outset, it was a place where new ideas were tested, and where people who didn t feel quite at home in other locales seemed to find comfort and camaraderie. Early Berkeley was a true frontier town embodying all the excitement, potential, and danger of America s Wild West. But the area had been long established as a fertile home for visionaries and individualists in the 1870s and 1880s, and even as far back as the gold rush era. In the mid-twentieth century, Berkeley grabbed the national spotlight as a bastion of free thinkers and rabble-rousers. Though most of today s residents and visitors are unfamiliar with Berkeley s earliest roster of offbeat characters, their legacy became part of the foundation for one of the country s most vibrant intellectual communities. Berkeley s enduring reputation as a haven for eccentrics the magical, the magnificent, and the malevolent has contributed greatly to the community s rich cultural history. ![]() ![]() What I can speak to is the Austen of it all, and I gotta say, it hits Emma notes in very clever ways, much the same way Clueless did: not over-the-top, but with all these little nods and easter eggs for Austen fans, while interpreting and reinventing the story in fresh, fun ways. I can't speak to the Friday Night Lights of it all, as I've never watched it (couldn't get past the nauseating shaky-cam of the first episode someone tell me if the camera work gets better and its worth sticking around?), but I'd imagine that any YA small town slice-of-Americana that heavily features football probably garners the same comparison. As I said in the video, it set up a lot of interesting contrasts well right from the beginning (there vs here, then vs now, us vs them). It was warm and endearing and funny, and captured the place-feel very well. ![]() Interference was strong from beginning to end. Basically I said it was on track to be a favorite of 2016, unless it took a nosedive, so now the question is: did it? There may have been "delighted jazz hands" in the video, so. I was smitten right from the first page, couldn't get over the voice and the fantastic dry humor, and well, everything, basically. Those of you who watched my First Impressions video on Interference will likely have suspected I was going to love this. ![]() ![]() 4.5 This was a really fun and clever take on Emma, with a fantastic voice. ![]() ![]() ![]() For within the crumbling manor’s extravagant rooms and musty halls, there lurks the shadow of another girl: Azure, Indigo’s dearest childhood friend who suddenly disappeared. Malouf’s prose feels timeless-lyric and direct in ways that recall the source material yet seem wholly contemporary.” Like Euripides, Malouf has scrutinized the vast fabric of Homer’s story, looking for open spaces in the weave to insert his own design.” Embroidered with imaginative details that often reanimate familiar elements of the epic. ![]() ![]() Ransom is a rich meditation on literary genre. “An eloquent and deeply moving tale of war, kingship, fatherhood, our common mortal lot, and-not incidentally-the enduring power of a good story.
